How BMI Works and What You Can Do to Reduce Yours

You have a BMI of 25-29, now what? If you have made a trip to the doctor lately or have been thinking about your health, you have probably heard the term Body Mass Index or BMI. But what is BMI? What is a healthy BMI? How do you calculate it? And what does your BMI mean? This article will explain more about BMI and, specifically, a BMI of 25-29.

What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?

Body Mass Index is a measure of healthy body weight for a given height. Calculating your BMI will tell you what category your body composition falls into. If your BMI is less than 18.5, you are considered underweight. A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is in the healthy weight category. 25 to 29.9, the group we’ll be talking about here, is overweight, and then you get into the obesity category at a BMI of 30 or higher.

How Do I Calculate BMI?

The BMI Formula is simply dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. When using pounds and inches, again, divide your weight by height squared but then multiply by 703 to convert the units back to kilograms and meters

BMI of 25-29: The “Overweight” Category

If your BMI works out to 25-29 you are in the overweight category. This is the designation just above the healthy weight category. For example, a healthy weight for a 6-foot tall man is 183 lbs. or less. If that person has a BMI of 25-29, that means they will weigh between 184 – 220 lbs.

– Heart Disease and Strokes

– Certain Types of Cancer

– Sleep Apnea

– Osteoarthritis

– Fatty Liver Disease

– Kidney Disease

Tips to Lose Weight and Reduce Your BMI

You’ve probably known since high school that you will not be getting any taller. This means that the only way to reduce your Body Mass Index is by losing weight. The best way to lose weight is through exercise and improving your diet. Here are 3 quick ways to start a weight loss program and reduce your BMI.

1. Upgrade Your Diet

Cut back on sugars, starches and processed food and eat more proteins, vegetables and healthy fats. This will boost your metabolism and get your body burning more fat throughout the day

2. Exercise Smarter

Cardio is good and will help you lose weight but the best way to lose weight is through high-intensity interval training (HIIT). This means exercising in short, intense bursts with small breaks in between. This workout boosts metabolism and encourages your body to burn fat throughout the day, long after the workout is over.

3. Drink Water

More water throughout the day will keep your cells and muscles hydrated to work more efficiently and will increase your “resting energy expenditure” which is the amount of calories your body burns. Just by making sure you are drinking 17 oz. of water a day, you will burn an additional 4.4 lbs. of fat per year!
